Special Olympics Restaurant of the Month

This year local restaurants will be hosting "Restaurant of the Month" fundraisers for your AISD Special Olympics Team. Each month a supporting restaurant will donate a percentage of the sales from that day to our team. Attached is a list of the restaurants and the dates of the events.

Please take a minute to mark your calendars and perhaps print the announcement and give to family, friends and students. The money raised allows our athletes the opportunity to compete in local and out of town events. The money also funds our Special Olympics Recognition Banquet at the end of the year where athletes are awarded for their hard work. AISD Special Olympics coaches and athletes thank you for your support.

Math in CTE Summer Workshop

We use math every day without even thinking about it. Career and Technical Education teachers from across the district focused on bringing embedded mathematical concepts to the forefront in their curriculum during a summer workshop. Partnering with teachers from math departments and special education in each high school, CTE/Math educator teams spent an intensive week integrating their curricula. Utilizing a seven-element pedagogic framework developed through research conducted by the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE), teams developed CTE lessons to enhance the mathematics that exists within the occupational curricula.

Understanding that math is an essential workplace skill, the purpose of this effort is to move away from the traditional model of instruction in which subjects are taught by themselves. Instead, CTE will show real world application of abstract mathematical concepts learned in the academic classroom. Improved math scores will be measurable in both the CTE and math classrooms. “By placing math in context, students can see the relevance of math in their own lives,” explains Tim Thompson, CTE Specialist. Thompson organized the workshop. “You could feel the energy level rise as teams gained momentum in their planning. The teachers are excited about increasing the rigor in their courses,” he observed. Not without hard work, the joint effort is accomplished without the need for school-based leadership or cultural change within the school.

(Pictured Above) Teachers from the departments of Career and Technical Education, Math, and Special Education attended the workshop. Special education teachers identified reasonable accommodations for students at all levels.

“Remarkable Stars” was launched on AISD website to celebrate teachers and staff of this district. Below are submissions by individuals about special education personnel.

Ms. Jennifer Agnello
Resource Teacher at Wimbish Elementary

Ms. Agnello always spends one on one time with each student and listens to his/her concerns or problems. She also teaches to the needs of her students; she loves to challenge them. It is amazing the difference in the children when they first enter her class and when they leave at the end of the year.

Mrs. Kimberly Griffith
Resource Lead Teacher at Wimbish Elementary

Mrs. G is returning back to teaching after a few years out to have her twins. I feel so fortunate to be working with her. She has such a kind heart and is understanding of her "children," always thinking of what is best for them not only for the moment but for the future. Returning back to special education can be a challenge (things change almost daily and the paperwork). She just smiles and gets it done. We are blessed to have her on our staff. We just love her.

Polly James
Special Education Department Chair at Hutcheson Junior High

Polly always goes out of her way to make sure that all information is given to the department and makes everyone feel welcome. She assists in the MAC lab while always doing the dual role of making sure the department runs smoothly. She truly cares for the children and is a wonderful advocate for them.

Ms. Denise Moore
Math Resource at Mac Lab Resource

Denise works tirelessly with all of our students. She hosts daily Lunch Crunchers to allow students more time to work on homework assignments during their lunch time, giving additional assistance and extra encouragement. She is attentive to each student academically as well as emotionally. She demonstrates her care to each student with words, help, involvement and confidence in their ability to master needed skills.

Mrs. Kim Peters
Special Education Team Leader at Miller Elementary

“Kim is the team leader for one of the largest special education programs at the elementary level. With more than 20 members to account for, she manages schedules, student needs, dissemination of information and still has time to meet the needs of all her students. Without her, our students and staff would be lost. Thanks Kim!!”
