Nurse's News

My name is Sandra Powers and I am the school nurse at Veda Knox Elementary. I received my nursing education at Burge Protestant School of Nursing and Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. I have enjoyed working for AISD over the last 20 years. I have had the priviledge of caring for the student at Veda Knox since the school opened in 2001. I want all of the students and the parents of our Veda Knox family to know they can come to my office or call me at any time to ask questions, obtain information or to get help. The clinic phone number is 682-687-2106.
My husband and I have 3 grown children and 7 grand children. All of my children are AISD graduates but they all attended different high schools, Sam Houston, Arlington High and Bowie high school. I graduated high school in Missouri and our mascot was the "Bluejay" just like we have at Veda Knox. We have lived in the states of Missouri, California, Conneticut, Kentucky, Maryland and Texas. We have been able to learn so much about different areas of the United States by living in so many states. I have enjoyed them all. We love to travel and I would like to travel internationally in the future.

State of Texas Annual Mandated Testing - Monday, September 26, 2011

Texas state mandated screening for vision, hearing, and Acanthosis Nigricans is done during the fall semester every year for grades 1, 3 and 5 and for new students to AISD. Pre K and Kinder are screened only for vision and hearing. 5th grade is also screened for scoliosis.

It is very important that the parents follow up as soon as possible on any referral sent home. A child can not learn to the best of his/her ability if he/she can not see or hear well. I want all of the Veda Knox family of students to be able to learn and succeed to the best of their ability. If you need help finding a doctor I will be glad to help you.

The Acanthosis Nigricans is a marker, that if present, means your child is at risk for type 2 diabetes in the future. It is very important to follow up this referral with doctor.  The doctor may order lab work as part of the diagnostic work up for your child and then advise you on what would be best for your child. Finding this marker gives you as a parent the opportunity to make changes for your child that will improve the health of your child.
