One of the best ways a parent can become involved in their children’s lives is to provide academic support. Middle school students should be spending 1-2 hours each evening on homework. It goes without saying, that students who are encouraged by parents and caregivers to complete homework will, no doubt, be successful in school. Below are some tips for parents to consider in order to effectively promote academic success.
o As quiet as possible with plenty of light
o If at all possible, homework time should be a part of your family’s daily routine (try to have it at the same time & place each day)
o Make sure basic supplies are available (pencil, paper)
o Have an organization system (pack up for the next day each evening)
o Utilize a “homework folder” where all assignments to be turned in the following school day are located
o YOU are your child’s first and most important teacher!
o Offer support and praise (even when the work is tough)
o Know when to call for help and don’t be afraid to do it!
o If it is important to you, it will be important to them.
o Check up on their progress (you’re not “babying them,” you’re ensuring their success)
o Ask about homework. If your child uses an agenda, ask to see it. If they don’t use an agenda, encourage it.
o Talk with your child's teachers regularly.
o Don't do your child's homework!
o Praise your child when he or she gets the right answers.
