AVID
AVID is a college prepratory program designed to prepare students with the skills necessary to be successful in rigorous academic classes. AVID uses techniques in writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading (WIC-R) to help students. The students learn note taking, organizational, and study skills and have access to tutors on a weekly basis.
The AVID program has been a part of the WJH campus since 2001 and is one of more than 70,000 junior high campuses across the United States and 13 other countries. Our program began small and has steadily grown over the years. The 2009-2010 school year will have six sections of AVID. We look forward to beginning a new year and helping new students reach their goals.

AVID T-shirts are on sale.  The cost is $5.00 and students are encouraged to purchase one.  It helps to promote school pride and helps to identify students as a member of a college preparatory group.

Learning Logs

Learning Logs are due the last AVID day of the week.  The students are to answer three simple questions about their core classes.

What did I do in class this week?

What did I learn in class this week?

What did I find interesting this week?

By keeping this journal, students will make connections between their core classes and improve their writing skills.

Students receive a weekly grade on their learning logs.  Not turning one in will count as a zero in their grades.

Cornell Notes

The students will be learning to take and use Cornell notes in classes.  Many teachers have already provided opportunities for students to take Cornell notes in their classes.  Each AVID student is responsible for taking notes in class without being told.  A grade will be given on the main parts of the notes:

Topic

Main Ideas

Details

Summary

Within 24 hours of taking the notes, students should refine their notes by adding missing details, adding questions to the left hand column, highlighting important information such as names, dates and events.  The summary should also be written to help students retain the information from the notes. As the student progresses, he or she will find that the notes make a great study tool.

Tutorial Sessions Have Begun

This year we are fortunate to have four wonderful tutors to work with our students.  All our tutors are district employees who have passed background investigations and are specifically trained to work with AVID students.  The tutors do not provide the answers for the students, but use skilled questioning methods to help students find the answers to their questions.

Students should come prepared for the tutorial sessions on the first day of class.  Where do tutorial questions come from?  They come from problems or questions missed on homework assignments, tests, or perhaps just concepts the students do not understand.

In order to make the tutorial sessions more successful, students must come prepared.  On the first AVID day of the week, students should come with their question on their tutorial request form.  They should also bring their textbook, class notes and any handouts the teacher has given them.  Being prepared makes the session run smoother and the group is able to get more accomplished.

Students receive a weekly grade on their tutorial.  Not being prepared and not participating will damage a student's grade.
