8th grade Reading

My goal for my 8th grade reading students is to be 100% ready for the TAKS test. I focus on improving my students' reading skills and introducing new strategies. We target the area that needs the most improvement and work individually from there. Major areas that are covered in 8th grade reading include the following: Word Recognition, Literary Elements, Reading Strategies, and Critical Thinking Skills.

In addition to TAKS strategies, I also supplement the English curriculum. We learn a plethora of new vocabulary words in 8th grade reading; we constantly practice using "high school words." Current events are also a common sight in my classroom. I am aware that students don't always sit and watch the news, so I feel that it is my duty to keep them informed of the major happenings in the world.

8th grade Athletics

My other teaching area is girls athletics; I am the 8th grade volleyball coach.  We begin volleyball the 1st day of school and it is generally over by mid-October. Here are some things to take into consideration if your daughter is considering trying out for the team.

* There is 1 A-team and 1 B-team in 8th grade, so I only keep approximately 20 girls in all.

* The athlete must be able to serve over hand in order to make the team; there are very few exceptions.

* 8th grade practices are after school until approximately 5:30.

** I highly encourage players interested in trying out for 8th grade to be part of a summer volleyball program; the following places offer Summer Volleyball leagues.
1. Arlington Courts, 2500 East Mayfield Rd., Ph.#  817.417.5468
2. YMCA, Arlington, Ph.#  817.274.9622
3.
Local high schools generally host summer volleyball camps as well.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further information.
