TEN HELPFUL TIPS FOR WORKMAN
JUNIOR HIGH PARENTS

1.                Get to know your child’s school, teachers and staff: Address your child’s needs with teachers, counselors and administrators at the beginning of the school year.
2.                Read the student code of conduct hand book, tardy policy, dress code policy, rules and guidelines of the school with your child.
3.                Encourage your child to join extra curricular activities: sport, music, art, student council, chess club, etc…
4.                Check your child’s progress report every 3 weeks, report card every 6 weeks, test scores and homework. Meet with the teachers/visit classrooms as needed.
5.                Register on line for the “In touch System” to monitor your child’s grades and attendance on line. E-mail or call your child’s teachers if you have any questions.
6.                Consistently monitor your child’s behavior and performance in school: Talk to/check with your child daily about homework, behavior and activities in school.
7.                Make sure your child turns in all assignments/homework on time and attends tutoring for extra help. Check with teachers about homework/assignments.
8.                Update your emergency information when you have changes: address, phone number and emergency contact person.
9.                Follow the chain of command when addressing concerns/issues about your child: (1st) meet with teachers/staff, (2nd) then counselors, and (3rd) then administrators.
10.           Get involved with school and be supportive: Volunteer and join SBDM committee, Title I committee, etc…

 Getting Acquainted

I was born and raised in Laos and have one brother and three sisters.  My older sister lives in Paris, France, and my older brother lives in Akron, Ohio.  My parents and two younger sisters remain in Laos.  I live in Arlington, Texas, with my husband and three children.  I love Arlington, but I do miss my family, my friends and the place where I grew up.

I left my home when I was fourteen to attend a boarding school which trained me to be a teacher.  I graduated when I was eighteen and became a 5th grade teacher in Laos.  A year later, my cousin's family and I moved to Akron, Ohio.  My English was poor when I arrived here, but it was better than most Laotians who lived in Akron at the time.  I attended English classes at the International Institute and volunteered to translate and teach beginning English classes to the Indochina Refugees.

While attending The University of Akron, I supported myself by working with the Akron Public Schools as a community liason and instructional assistant for grades K to 12.  I also cleaned houses and worked at a Chinese restaurant on the weekends.

I believe that our children are our future.  We cannot afford to fail them.  Teaching and educating our children is where I belong.

 Tardy Guidelines for 2008-2009

All students are expected to report to class on time. Workman Junior High School tardy committee met and revised the guidelines to meet the needs of our students on August 22, 2008. Below are the tardy guidelines:

1.      Three tardies in a class period equals one unexcused absences for that class period.

2.      Five cumulative tardies in any combination of classes equals a team conference with parent. If the parent does not show for the team conference, than the student will be assigned Wednesday school by an assistant principal.

3.      After three Wednesday schools, the student will be assigned ISS by an assistant principal.

4.       A truancy officer will be informed as needed for attendance requirements.

5.       The n umber of tardies starts over each six weeks, but consequences can carry over to the next six weeks.

6.      Converting the three tardies to an ABS per class will be handled by the team at the end of each six weeks during the ABS meeting.

7.      The office will send out a list of the students who have reached the cumulative five tardies to the teams, so that the conference can be scheduled by the team.

8.      Teachers will do a sweep at the beginning of their conference periods in assigned locations.

9.      The teacher will take students to a phone (in their classroom or office) to call the parent. The teacher will remind the parent about the five tardies resulting in a conference. Teacher will then walk the students to their class; the students who are walked to class by a teacher will not be subject to the TD5 rule, but will be marked tardy by the teacher.
