Classroom Instruction and Evaluation Strategies
Our goal in a junior high speech communication class is to help students equip themselves with effective skills for living in the everyday world of communication. Speech student assessment must be based on more than just the student's performance on written activities. Students are also evaluated on their performance in class activities, discussions and oral presentations. This variety of methods of evaluation allows students to demonstrate specific competencies in many areas.
We may record at least three separate grades for major presentations: an outline grade that reflects organizaton skills, a content grade that reflects the quality of research and use of information, and a delivery grade that reflects the student's verbal and nonverbal skills. This method clearly shows the student's specific strengths and weaknesses in his overall preparation and performance.
