| Do students have to create their own art or can they use existing clip art? |
Participating in the Media Fair offers a great opportunity to teach students about ethics and copyright. The ideal method to meet all requirements is for students to create their own art. When a student uses a software program such as KidPix or Photoshop to create an original design, the student learns valuable technology skills and masters important technology TEKS. Judges have little doubt about the copyright status of the work.
Any visual, graphic, or audio material not created by the entrant must be identified. Credit must be given to the creator of the work, and a written copy of permission from the owner of the copyright must be submitted. Exceptions include the Microsoft Clip Art Gallery or graphics where permission is granted by owning the software such as images in Kid Pix or Inspiration. In those cases, the work should be cited, but written permission to use the work is not required.
Since a judge who has any reason to doubt the originality or legality of a student's work may lower the project’s score, students should play it safe where copyright is concerned.

| If students use public domain music, are they required to list it in the credits? |
The source of the music must be cited in the credits and its public domain status must be noted.

| What format should be used to cite copyrighted material? |
No specific format is required but the following information must be included:
- Author of original work
- Individual title, or specific section of a collected work
- Publisher
- Copyright date
| Will there be a top winner in each category? |
Assuming that quality entries are received for all levels and categories, there will be a winner for each eligible level (grades PK-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). There will not be one overall winner for an entire PK-12 category.

Will there be a Best of Show award?
If judges determine that an entry deserves such recognition, there will be a Best of Show award.
| Are entries limited to core-curriculum TEKS (language arts, social studies, math, science)? |
No. A music student, for example, might enter a digital audio project that demonstrates mastery of specific Fine Arts TEKS. A Physical Education student might create a video to demonstrate the rules of a specific sport. The possibilities are endless, but all projects must be curriculum-related. The entry form requires participants to describe a curriculum objective addressed in the project. Judges’ criterion includes the following:
- The educational purpose is clearly evident.
- Completion of this project results in the student’s mastery of subject-area and technology TEKS.

| Is it okay for a student to use a picture of themselves in a "get to know the artist" kind of way as long as we have the written permission of the parents? This was the student's idea. |
| If the parent took the picture and submits written permission, the answer is yes. If someone other than the parent took the picture, the photographer and parent should provide written permission. (The photographer owns the copyright and may or may not allow the student to reproduce, store, and re-distribute the picture in digital format.)
If obtaining permission from the photographer is difficult, the teacher or parent could use a digital camera, take a picture of the student, and submit that picture with a written statement of permission. Every campus owns several digital cameras.
| Should the student include personal information in the project? |
Before a project is submitted to the district level, it is best that all personal identification of students should be removed. Student names, for example, should not appear on screens or slides.
