 Faculty Spotlight Minimize

2011 – 2012 Teachers in the Spotlight

October’s Teacher in the Spotlight

Name: Kristen Newcomb

Years at Ousley: 1st

Degrees and college/ university(s): Technology Education – Wayland Baptist University

Years teaching: 5, if other than Ousley where: Young Junior High

Why are you a teacher? I became a teacher after substituting and finding out that I really enjoyed working with children.  Seeing their faces light up with new ideas and thoughts that you helped them reach motivated me to become a teacher.  Having a dyslexic daughter has even broadened my compassion and determination to try to reach every child and help them grow and learn. I love sharing what I know with others adults as well as children. Plus it provides me with the stability and time to raise my three girls on my own.

Hobbies and interests: Family outings, reading, computers, Disney, family genealogy, collecting Disney memorabilia and dolphins

Family (pets count): I have 3 daughters. They are 20, 18 and 17.  Oldest, Nicole is a junior at Rice. Middle, Catie, is a freshman at Texas A&M Galveston, but is transferring back to the metroplex for the spring semester. Youngest, Megan, is a junior at Mansfield Timberview High School. Megan is in the Ready, Set, Teach program in her school. My mother is a teacher at Thornton Elementary in Arlington and my father is a retired administrator from Wichita Falls.

Why are you a teacher? Working with kids is never boring!  Every day is interesting and fun.  I love teaching science because it helps students to understand the world around them and see things in a different light.  Also, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of helping a student understand a concept or make improvements in their progress, their grade, or their life!

Hobbies and interests: My faith is most important in my life.  I also love to go running and I enjoy snowboarding (although I can’t do these things for a few months).  I love spending time with family and friends.  My favorite TV shows are The Office, Dual Survival, and Man vs. Wild.

Family (pets count): I have a husband (Dustin) and a 4-year old daughter (Eva).  We are also expecting a little boy in April!  We also have a cat (Ella) who loves to knock things off of the Christmas tree.

Other interesting “stuff”: I like cartoons, like SpongeBob and Adventure Time.  I am also a spelling bee nerd.  I always participated in the spelling bee in junior high, and one year, I advanced to Washington DC for the national spelling bee.
