Arlington ISD Title I - Wednesday, May 21, 2008

The purpose of Title 1, Part A is to enable schools to provide opportunities for children to acquire the knowledge and skills contained in Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and to meet the standards of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) which was developed for all children.

Campuses qualify for Title 1 funding based upon their free or reduced lunch percentage. In Arlington, 37 schools (5 junior high schools, 31 elementary schools and a pre-kindergarten center) qualify for funding. The poverty levels of these schools range from 55% to 94%.

Funds are primarily used to provide extended learning time for students, additional materials and supplies, staff development for teachers and family involvement activities.

Additional Action to Ensure Access to Federal Student Loans
Secretary Spellings announced that the U.S. Department of Education would take further action to purchase Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans to ensure students have continued access to Federal student loans. The Department will use its existing authority to purchase 2007-2008 academic year FFEL loans. The purchase program is designed to minimize potential disruption in student lending until the conduit program becomes operational.

Reading First Impact Study: Final Report
Secretary Spellings announced the release of the Institute of Education Sciences' report: Reading First Impact Study: Final Report. This report presents an additional year of data from 2006-2007 on student reading comprehension and classroom instruction. In addition, the report includes information on the impact of the program on first-grade students' decoding skills.

In an era when what students know is the most important factor in determining success, postsecondary education has never been more critical. Although two thirds of high-growth, high wage jobs require a college degree, only a third of Americans have one. Ninety percent of the fastest-growing jobs in the knowledge-driven economy will require postsecondary education but more than 60 percent of Americans ages 25-64 have no postsecondary education credential.

Tucker Exits ED
Secretary Spellings announced that Sara Martinez Tucker will leave her position as under secretary at the U.S. Department of Education effective November 21.

Final Regulations to Strengthen NCLB
Secretary Spellings announced final regulations to strengthen and clarify No Child Left Behind (NCLB), focusing on improved accountability and transparency, uniform and disaggregated graduation rates and improved parental notification for Supplemental Education Services and public school choice. The Secretary made the announcement while speaking to educators, state and local policymakers and business leaders at South Carolina Educational Television in Columbia, S.C.

Amazing Space
Consists of web-based educational presentations for young children about space, which were developed at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Teachers teamed up with scientists and engineers from the institute and staff members from the Office of Public Outreach to develop interactive lessons. All lessons include spectacular photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and many high quality graphics, videos, and animation designed to enhance student understanding and interest. New Grant Opportunities
Notices inviting applications have been issued recently under ED programs that include the following: Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Fellowship, Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program, and Regional Technical Assistance and Continuing Education (TACE) Centers.
