From its beginning in 1980, AVID has been recognized as an innovative school and district program, with data to prove its success in preparing students for college. Beginning 30 years ago with one high school and 32 students, AVID now serves over 400,000 students in nearly 4,500 elementary and secondary schools in 45 states, the District of Columbia and across 16 countries/territories.

The word AVID:

Avid adj.: enthusiastic; ardent; characterized by vigorous pursuit [ Latin root is avidus for eager for knowledge]

AVID is a college preparatory program for grades six through

twelve that empowers students to succeed in a

rigorous academic curriculum.

The goal of AVID is to educate the whole student by unifying six important elements of education: students, curriculum, faculty, skills, parents, and community.

The AVID curriculum includes instruction in study skills, organizational skills, communication skills, writing, test-taking strategies, personal development, and team-building.

The Mission of AVID is to:

-Close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

- Prepare middle and high school students for eligibility and success in four-year colleges and universities.
- Increase college preparation and college awareness on the part of the students.
- Increase academic success of students.
- Increase opportunities for students to enroll in advanced college preparatory courses at the
high school     level.
- Provide support services for students enrolled in the program.
- Develop and encourage a positive attitude toward high school and higher education on the part of an          AVID
student.
