First Grade News
1st Six Weeks 2010-2011
Welcome to 1st Grade! Our first graders will be learning so many things this year! We are excited about the opportunity to have and teach your child this year.
Students will be building their stamina in reading, writing, and word work activities. Having stamina will enable students to be fully engaged in learning reading strategies, working through the writing process and word work skills. Students will write everyday about topics they self-select. Their stories will be published, illustrated, shared with friends and family, then housed in their independent book boxes for daily reading. What a fun way to learn about the writing process!
In Math, students begin the year with work on the number system. Students will count and compare numbers, work with addition strategies of small numbers, and compose/decompose numbers in multiple ways. Students will solve problems using manipulatives, drawings, and notations.
Students begin with a study of school, 5 senses, and keeping fit in Social Studies and Science. Students will learn the importance of rules, and ways to stay healthy and fit.
Parents, please make plans to attend Parent Night on Tuesday, August 31st from 6:45-7:15 in your child’s classroom. We will discuss procedures, curriculum, homework, and answer questions you have about first grade.
