Fourth Grade
Time flies when you’re having fun…well, we are having a blast in fourth grade so it’s not surprising we can’t believe we are well into the 2nd six weeks of school! Our first six weeks together was spent getting to know each other, formally and informally, learning routines and setting expectations. We are enjoying great pieces of literature, such as Crab Moon, Tops and Bottoms, My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, and Something Beautiful while developing comprehension strategies, building our vocabulary and trying new writing techniques. Each student seems to have found a favorite author or series to read. They keep books stocked in their book box—ask your child who or what they are reading right now.
Multiplication facts and strategies has been our focus in math. We encourage you to help your child practice their multiplication facts up to 12x12 until they have a fairly rapid recall of the products. Now, we are using our knowledge of multiplication to solve more challenging problems. We have also been discussing measurement, patterns, and probability. Building their math vocabulary will be an important part of your child’s growth as a mathematician. Using the words factor, multiple, and product appropriately in different contexts can be challenging, so we practice communicating about our mathematical thinking every day.
We had a great time studying the geography of Texas in our Social Studies unit—check out the display case across from the cafeteria to see the product of our hard work. In Science, we are learning about systems and how parts have to work together for the system to work. We will continue to look deeply at other aspects of Life Science this six weeks before moving on.
