Fifth Graders off to a Fantastic Start this Fall!
Autumn is here! It’s hard to believe we are into the second six weeks of school. We have had a wonderful time getting to know each other and have covered a great deal of academic material.
This year the reading focus has been on main idea, character analysis, finding books that are a good fit, and reading comprehension. The Daily Five framework structures our reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. Currently, fifth grade students are reading independently, working on writing, and doing word work.
Students had their first reading benchmark in October. Results will be back by the end of the month.
In Social Studies, students finished the overview of American History. They have been honing their map skills as well.
Next, they will briefly look at pre-Colonial period before beginning in depth study of the thirteen colonies.
In Math place value and computation was reviewed. Every day we practice factors and multiples with properties of numbers and problem solving with Target the Question. Because problem solving is easier when students know their math facts, students are quizzed each week on multiplication facts. If your student struggles with this, it is time to get out the flash cards and learn these facts.
We just had our first benchmark and results will be back by end of October. Now we are focusing on adding and subtracting decimals.
The fifth grade scientists have learned about systems and safety, and have looked at the equipment in the lab. We got to wear our goggles, aprons, and gloves when we did experiments about the properties of matter. Our next topic is mixtures and solutions. Then we will learn about energy. The first science benchmark is October 22nd.
We hope your fifth grader is enjoying the year as much as we are; stop by our table during Math-o-Ween!
