Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language and Roquemore Elementary hosted a Family Literary Showcase Thursday evening, Oct. 29. Approximately 280 people attended the fun evening, which included a performance by the Jones kindergarteners of “The Day the Crayons Quit.”

“The performance of ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ was a big hit!” said Katiuska Herrador, principal of Jones and Roquemore. Following the performance, families enjoyed various literacy activities in the fine arts room, gym, library and computer lab, such as perusing e-books, creating words, playing vocabulary bingo and writing about their favorite color. The school’s Healthy Zone grant provided healthy snacks and smoothies and families browsed and purchased books in the book fair.

“Clifford visited, too!” Herrador added. “It was a great night!”

Jones Academy is one of two new fine arts and dual language academies the Arlington ISD opened this school year with a class of kindergarteners at each. Jones is housed at Roquemore Elementary. The two academies will be renovated soon to enhance their fine arts and dual language programming. State-of-the-art fine arts spaces like strings rooms, piano practice rooms, drama space and dance studios will be added, paid for by the 2014 Bond package.
