Oversight committee meets for quarterly review of bond program
Nov. 11, 2015 – The Citizens Bond Oversight Committee met yesterday in the library at Patrick Elementary for its quarterly review of the status and progress of the 2014 Bond program. Led by AISD chief financial officer Cindy Powell, AISD staff gave updates on the various areas of the bond: fine arts; safety, security and technology; transportation; and facilities.
Powell also announced that the Board of Trustee has revised the CBOC’s charge to include student input. The members of the Student Leadership Advisory Board (SLAB), comprised of 11th grade class presidents from each of the AISD’s high schools, will now be invited to attend and participate as non-voting members of the CBOC.
Following the updates, Danielle McReynolds, AISD PK-12 science/health coordinator, gave a presentation to the CBOC about the two STEM labs each elementary school will receive, paid for by the 2014 Bond. She also discussed the concept of STEM education, along with the professional development and curriculum support her department is providing for math and science teachers. She explained that STEM is a pedagogy that “builds skills in kids so they become very well-rounded students.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, CBOC members were invited to see Patrick Elementary’s STEM labs. Patrick, the AISD’s newest school, opened in August and features the kind of STEM labs that will go in all AISD elementary schools.
