History

James Bowie High School was originally opened in 1973 and occupied what is presently known as Workman Junior High School. However, due to the opening of Martin High School in southwest Arlington and the growth pattern of South Arlington, Bowie was closed in 1983. In 1991, Bowie reopened in a beautiful new facility located at 2101 Highbank Drive at the corner of Highbank and Sherry. Bowie draws attendance from southeast Arlington and parts of southwest Grand Prairie. Due to the fast growth in this area of town, new academic wings, a new gym and an expanded cafeteria were built to keep pace with the fast growth.

The school's population was at its largest in 2002 with an enrollment of approximately 3100 students. The enrollment today is projected at around 2900 students.

The first principal of James Bowie High School was Mrs. Jean Richerson until her retirement. Following Mrs. Richerson was Mrs. Cheryl Rose and Mr. Davey Jones. Mr. Darrell Sneed is currently Bowie's principal and has been since 2001.
