Beach Party

On the week before Spring Break, third-grade  sometimes celebrate spring with a beach unit.  Included in the unit will be beach ball stories, ocean math, symmetrical fish, and items in a bottle.  To end the week, we will bring our lunches to school and eat in our classrooms while sitting on beach towels, wearing sunglasses, and listening to Beach Boy music.  It is great fun for everyone!

Pizza Party

Our Star Student Discipline System gives us an opportunity to reward students for wonderful behavior.  Each day students have the opportunity to earn three stars on their discipline card.  At the end of the six weeks grading period, we add the total number of stars for each student.  If a student earns 35 stars during the six weeks, he will receive five Star Cards that may be turned in for a piece of candy, or he may place his Star Cards in a container for a chance to win a different prize.  If a student earns 55 stars during the six weeks, he will receive the five Star Cards and an "Oops!" card.  The "Oops!" card may be turned in to take the place of one mistake, such as when they forget to complete their homework.  The largest reward for third-graders is given when they earn 75 stars.  They receive the Star Cards, "Oops!" card, and they have the opportunity to purchase one half of a large pizza to be eaten in the classroom during our lunch period.  The students love to eat in the class area with their friends and teachers.

Keyboarding

Third-Grade is the first year that the students use the "Paws" program to learn proper keyboarding skills.  During the first four weeks of school, each third-grader spends 30 minutes daily learning the proper keystrokes and practicing his/herkeyboarding skills.  The District Guidelines set a goal for third-graders of 15 wpm at 80% or better to keyboard successfully.  We are always very impressed with the expert way the students keyboard by the end of these four weeks.  They use their keyboarding skills while working on other word-processing programs in the computer lab.

Field Trip

The third-grade students take one field trip during the school year.  We have visited many different locations including the Fort Worth Zoo, the Omni Theater, American Airlines Center, Arlington's Historical Log Cabin Village, and Casa Mañana.  The third-graders enjoy their special trip.
