4th Grade Orchestra Recruiting
By Garrett H, Tommy O, and David N.
With perfect execution, the Dunn Orchestra played with smiles on their faces as the 4th graders wondered in awe. They were happy to play their future money making instruments for next years strings players. Many people might think that all orchestra is, is moving a bow across an instrument, but every orchestra member at Dunn agrees that it is so much more. As one orchestra member said, ”It is important for these 4th graders see us perform because it makes them want to join and experience orchestra for themselves.” Some of the popular songs that they played were: Harry Potter, Jaws, The Chicken Dance, and, Apache. This recruiting is very important to not only Dunn string players but to their maestro Mrs. Greer. She knows the importance of getting kids involved in music whether it be choir, band, or strings. She loves music and hopes that the 4th graders future 5th graders will make it a passion that soon influences their way of life. |

Dunn’s 6th graders Tommy O., Madeleine S., Melissa
S., Meghan W., and Phillip G. entered this year’s Optimist Oratorical
Speech Contest. This years theme was “If I Were The Leader Of the Free
World the First Issue I Would Address Would Be…” Each of them made a wonderful
speech on what they thought about it. In the end Tommy received a gold
medal. Madeleine, Melissa, Meghan, and Phillip received a silver medal.
Tommy will continue to the next round of the contest. The 6th graders
who entered gave an awesome speech and we applaud them.

Have you ever wondered where your fundraising
money goes? Well, that money goes to the schools technology department.
The technology department at your school might spend the money that you raise
on things like computers, I pads, and Net Books. A lot of kids do a
fundraising program just for the prizes, and don’t even realize that
they’re helping their school as well! This new technology helps kids
greatly because it is a new, cool, way of learning so they volunteer for
activities to use the new equipment, and before you know it your kid is
actually learning while having fun! The teachers at Dunn really emphasize
this new way of learning and love the new technology because it not only
helps their kids out; it makes their job easier too! Many parents now think
the new technology is bad and could have never thought it was going to be
used for educational purposes! The new technology opens up a world of responsibility
that is good for the student’s trustworthiness. All in all, the purchasing
of the new technology has been a huge success for Dunn.

Destination ImagiNation is a program that’s new
to our school, Dunn Elementary. The students were very excited to
get to try it this year. Destination ImagiNation is a competition where
kids use creative thinking. They presented a skit to demonstrate their
creativity in the competition, and much more! The team’s sponsors, Mrs.
Klett and Mrs. Hiremath, worked as hard as the kids did on the Destination
ImagiNation project. The kids needed guidance, and the adults were there
to help them. The kids worked hard on their gypsy wagon, which was used
in their skit. The team members are Brynn H., Colton F., David S., Jordan
Z., Madeleine “Maddy” S., Logan T., and Caleb M. These students are hard
working, smart, and role models. They had their contest on February
19, 2011. Good Job, Dunn’s Destination ImagiNation team!

This boy that you see is Adam K., a fourth grader.
He won the hoop shoot contest at Dunn then he went to the city contest
and took 1st place by making 20 out of 25 free throw shots. He was facing
kids that were third and fourth graders. Adam quotes that when he won
the hoop shoot contest, “I was going nuts inside, but I was being cool
on the outside.” After he won city, he was going to state. Adam says that
when he went to state that he felt scared, and in the end he got 3rd by
making 22 out of 25. Second place made 23 out of 25, and first place made
25 of 25, but I say that he did an awesome job. Way to go, Adam!

Have you ever wondered why teachers look so hassled?
Well, it is because they have so much work. You might say“Teachers
never have homework!” Well actually they do! Think about
it. How do your papers get graded? Yes, that’s right; they do it
at home! But finally teacher assist comes to the rescue! 6th graders
that get their work done on time, get to go and help a teacher! Matthew
P. (one of the teacher assist this six weeks) was inter-viewed and one
of the important points that he made was that “It is all about helping
the teachers and pitching in” as well as having the goal of “Its
not about me!” The kids who helped out were the teacher’s “mini super heroes”
for a day. From grading papers to helping in the library to just plain
helping out in the classroom, Teacher Assist Day was a huge success!

Young Jr. High played very well on December the
10, 2010, with the variety of songs they chose to play. Some
were very fast and strong while others were slow and smooth. Like
Eye of the Tiger was very fast, but a slower one they played was
Frosty the Snowman. In this great performance they played other great
songs. They also introduced all the sections of the band, as well as
all the instruments. Most people in the audience probably liked the
drum line the best when they had the solo in the beginning considering
how loud they applauded when they were finished. The conductors must
have taught this group of junior high students perfectly; the conductor’s
names were Mrs. Dodson and Mr. Howie. We would love to have them come
back to Dunn and play us some songs anytime. They were great!

Mrs. Klett’s 4th grade class read a book
called Our Flag and wrote a letter to a group of veterans in
Iraq named William Hickman, Vincent Campo, Ben Scott, Philip Beman,
Jason Paulson, and Eric Gjirsvold. They told the veterans that they
are very grateful for what they are doing to protect our country.
The veterans wrote letters back to each member of the class. The class asked questions like “How do you feel every day?” and ”Are you proud to be a soldier of America?” and they received replies of scared, awesome, frightening, and yes, we are proud to be American soldiers. The soldiers also sent back coins of their rank on the submarine to the class. They said “Awarded with the Highest Honor.” The class also received a plaque that thanked Mrs. Klett’s 4th grade class. We had the opportunity to interview two of the class’s students. We asked them a few questions like “Would you want to join the Navy?” and “If you had the chance to write to them every week, would you?” They answered us with varied answers of yes, no, and yes, again. We have one more question, would you choose to be in the navy? Published 1-7-11

What a way to start the day at Dunn! What seemed
like a normal morning to outsiders was a wild party to everyone
at our beloved school. The whole school gathered together in
the Dunn Cafetorium (Cafeteria/Auditorium) to sing their little
(and big) hearts outJ. Even the “big, tough” 6th graders joined
in with the singing. When it came time to sing “The Twelve Days of
Christmas,” some of the teachers, including the principals, dressed
up as the gifts in the song (everyone loved it).
We interviewed a parent who was playing a small part in making it all happen. This parent told us that two of the teachers (Mrs. Haugan and Mrs. Witherspoon) came up with the plan for the teachers to go all crazy. The songs that we sang were: Deck the Halls, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, The Chipmunk Song, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, Up on the Housetop, Nothin' For Christmas, Twelve Days of Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, Let it Snow, Holly Jolly Christmas, Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and much more. HAPPY HOLIDAYS DUNN FAMILIES! Published 12/17/10

You think that pajamas are only for sleeping?
Well, you’re wrong! Dunn Elementary had a pajama day December 17th, 2010.
What a way to end 2010, at Dunn! Most of the students came with clean, nice
pajamas and were ready for school! It wasn’t only for the students; even
most of the teachers wore pajamas to school! We visited some of the classrooms
taking pictures, and we saw all the cool pajamas! Even some of the students
brought robes, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, house shoes, and even stuffed
animals! Haven’t you always wanted to get in your pajamas and say, “I’m ready
for school”? Well, the students and teachers at Dunn Elementary were able
to! Dunn Elementary was probably not the only school to have a pajama day,
probably several schools have had pajama days! Pajama day was a special event
at Dunn! We have our principals Mrs. Joeckel and Mrs. Dailey to thank. Thank
you! Pajama day is fun and students look forward to another pajama day in
the future.

You should know if you ever see a
smirk on a kid’s face that they just came from a holiday party at Dunn.
From making a snowflake, to decorating a cookie, to crafts,
to games, and to snacks, it is all smiles and grins at Dunn holiday
parties. Every grade looks like they are having a blast with their
selection of activities. You might say “ Hey I sent my kids to Dunn
to learn, not to party!” they still did learn some things like to say
“please” and “thank you” when talking to a parent volunteer. Pre-K had
a great time hitting a piñata as you can see in the bottom right
of the pictures. Every grade had some cookies to decorate and eat. This
is one of the few days that Dunn gets to have sweets, and the students made
the most of it. Published 12/17/10

The Dunn Choir and Orchestra had a holiday concert
on December 9, 2010, with songs like “Jingle Bell Rock”
to “Let it Snow.” The Dunn Orchestra did an awesome job with all
different sections performing in unison to a lot of Christmas
songs. But the Dunn All-Star Choir will not be left out; they
did a wonderful job with awesome skits during, after, and before
their songs. You could see Rudolph trying to play with the other
reindeer and Santa coming up to help. Also the All-Star Choir had solos
for many of the songs, which made the songs sound good with the harmony
of the soloist and the choir. The Orchestra also had a good performance
where you could hear all the cellos, violins, basses, and violas. The 5th
grade performed songs like “Jingle Bells”, while the 6th grade orchestra
played “Deck the Halls,” and other songs. This performance was a really
good one for the choir and orchestra of Dunn.

As the years pass, Dunn gets older,
but its spirit gets even better each year. Every year
the school thinks of a new theme. In 2006, the theme was Movie
Stars, in 2007, it was Old Western Dragons, in 2008, it was
Dragon Astronauts and in 2009, it was Dragon Boot Camp. Then in
2010, the theme is Peace, Love, and Dragons. It is the best the
theme ever. If your child joined our school, he or she would say, “I
love this school. This is the best school I have ever been to.”
If you were to join Dunn P.T.A. you will be entering a peaceful, loving school. You won’t regret joining Dunn P.T.A. it’s a wonderland here. Published 11/5/2010

Many students whether they are 1st or 6th graders
enjoy the Walk to School with a teacher very much. It
gives them many opportunities to make new friends and get
to know each other. Not only is it good for your health, but
also it’s good for the environment. We Dunn Dragons are trying
to set a good example for other students as well as citizens of Arlington,
Texas.
Lots of students and teachers participated in the activity on October 7, 2010. Any student can join if they want to. It is not a requirement, but for the ones that did participate, it was a great experience. This has been Walking With The Dragons by Duncan. Published 11/5/10

Who do you see in the mornings doing traffic control?
The Dunn Dads of course!
The Dunn Dads are dads who volunteer in the early morning at Dunn Elementary to keep our school safe. So I asked Brian Stokes (A.K.A. Mr. Smiley) why he does it. “ I do it because I want parents to drop off their kids in a safe and efficient manner,” Brian says with a smile. Not only do they take the time to help our school, but they’re also always greeting the students and parents with a friendly “Good Morning!”. What a great way to start your day! We love our Dunn Dads! . Published 10/5/10
