FBLA History
The FBLA concept was developed in 1937 by Dr. Hamden L. Forkner of Columbia University. The first high school chapter was chartered in Johnson City, Tennessee, February 03. 1942. A post secondary division, Phi Beta Lambda, was created in 1958, and a Middle Level division of FBLA was established in July 1994. In 1989, the Professional Division was organized to include business people, administrators, parents, alumni, and all persons supporting the goals of FBLA-PBL.
Purpose
Phi Beta Lambda is a nonprofit educational association of students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. To provide, as an integral part of the instruction program, opportunities for students to develop vocational and career competencies and to promote civic and personal responsibilities.
Mission
“The FBLA-PBL Mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs" - Mission from National FBLA-PBL Web site ( http://www.fbla-pbl.org ). The mission is established through leadership and career development programs. These leadership and career development programs include:
- Professional activities that advance students skills or knowledge of the business world.
- Service activities that help people in need.
- Civic activities that support civic pride and good citizenship. Chapters work with local chambers of commerce, business people, and business organizations.
- Fundraising activities that finance chapter projects and conference trips. Chapters can participate in national fundraising programs or develop local fundraisers of their own.
