Coaches' Corner
Head Boys and Girls Swim Coach Jon Ivonen is a graduate of St. Cloud State University, in Minnesota, with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a four year letterman, Brainard Scholar Athlete Award Winner, and Captain of the SCSU Swim Team. He swam on the Huskies 800 Freestyle Relay that competed in NCAA Division II National Championships in 1980.
He spent three years coaching high school swimming in Sartell, Minnesota before moving to Arlington. In his 29 years at Martin, the boy's teams have won 15 District Championships, 3 Region Championships, and have placed in the top 5 at State Championships. The girls teams have won 18 District Championships, 4 Region Championships, and placed in the top 5 at State Championships twice, one of those being 1987 State Championship Runner Up. The boys and girls teams have each been ranked in the top 15 nationally twice. Coach Ivonen has been named Region Coach of the Year 12 times in his career.
Over the years, the Warrior Swim Teams have had numerous High School All Americans which includes Lori Werth, Martin's first Athletic State Champion. (500 Freestyle 1987)
Coach Ivonen resides in Grand Prairie with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Jordan. He enjoys spending summers with his family at his lakeside cabin in Northern Minnesota.
