Shared Decision Making Guidelines

Decisions may be command, consultative or by consensus.

Command decisions are made by the leader of the group.

Consultative decisions are made by the leader with input from the group.

Consensus decisions are made by the group.

A strawdog is a rough draft for consideration which helps to clarify issues and saves time.

Ground Rules are set by the team to insure that an effective meeting evolves.

Consensus gaining process is a four step process:

  • Specify – write and present it without interruption
  • Clarify – ask “Please explain” questions.
  • Modify – suggest “Please consider” alternatives.
  • Ratify – “Can you give this a ‘6’?”

Gain consensus (at least in spirit) by asking, “Can you support our decision/selection with a ‘6’ or better on a scale of 1 (no) to 10 (yes)?”

If not, “What would it take to get you to a ‘6’?”

Criteria for Good Decisions include:

  • What is best for kids, NOT what’s easiest for adults.
  • What is fair.
  • What is right.
  • What is legal.
