Write in response to the "thought-provoking question" of your choice.  Write you answer in a single sentence.  Then write two paragraphs, one for each of two major points you want to use to support your answer.  Be sure to include specific examples and clear explanation of your thinking.  Also, include at least two references to Oedipus (these don't have to be quotes, but can just be based on what you know about the plot & characters).

  3. Journal: Musical Opinions.  Click here for instructions.

Get a copy of the college essay topics. (slot #5) These are the topics for the Texas Common Application.  Different schools have different requirements, so look up the school you are interested in to see if the want you to answer a certain topic.  If you are interested in an out-of-state school, look up their essay topics and bring them to class next time.  If your school or post-graduation plans don't include an essay requirement, you can choose any of the four topics provided.
  5. Get a copy of the Independent Reading short story list. (slot #7) By next class, look up summaries of the stories to find ones that interest you.  You can find summaries online or in the Short Stories for Students books in our library.  Come to class next time with a list of 3-5 stories you're interested in.

  5. Journal:  Look at the 10 characteristics on my back wall.  Pick one that you think you are close to attaining and one that you need to work on.  Write about those two characteristics in a journal writing titled "room for improvement."
  6. Turn in the Neruda "Poetry" writing from last class.
  7. Get a folder for next class that you can use for your journals.

  1. Read Pablo Neruda's "Poetry" (slot #1)
  2. Mark words or phrases that you like for any reason.  Mark at least 5.
  3. Write a poem or prose (journal writing, anything!) using at least five of the words/phrases that you chose from poem.  The writing can be about ANYTHING.  If you get stuck, write about yourself -- it's what you know best!
