A Brief History of Rankin Elementary School

History, Uniforms and Traditions

Rankin Elementary School is named for the long -time Arlington educator, Miss Bess Rankin. Born in 1899, Miss Rankin served the Arlington schools for almost twenty years. Miss Rankin taught both in elementary and high school and became principal of the old North Side School. She was Arlington's first woman principal. Former students of Miss Rankin said she was "well liked and a highly respected teacher and principal." Miss Rankin came from a family who prized education. Her father, Mr. E. E. Rankin, a successful pioneer merchant of early Arlington, was one of the first supporters of what is now the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).

Bess Rankin Elementary School was officially dedicated on December 6, 1959. Mr. Walker was the first principal. In 1999, a forty year celebration and reunion was held with many former students and staff in attendance. The occasion was further enhanced by the presence of some of Bess Rankin's nieces and nephews and their families.

Uniforms

Rankin Elementary Student Uniform Policy

Rankin Elementary is a uniform school. Parents voted the current plan into action during the 2001-2002 school year.
- Clothing is to be free of printing and logos.
- Colors:
- Pants only Khaki or Navy
- Collars are required on all shirts.
- No Denim (Blue Jeans)
- Only khaki, navy, or white sweaters or jackets may be worn in class. Any color coats/jackets may be worn to and from school and at recess. However, once in class, jackets and coats that are not uniform colors must be kept in lockers
- Friday is “Rankin Red Day.” Red shirts, or Rankin shirts may be worn on Fridays with uniform pants, shorts, or skirts.
- ALL SHIRT TAILS MUST BE TUCKED IN.

If parents/guardians desire an exemption from the uniform policy, they must present a letter stating their philosophical or religious reason to the principal of the school each year. The parent will have 20 school days from the first day of school or first day of enrollment to apply for the exemption.

La ropa no debe de tener estampas o logo tipos.

Cuellos son requeridos en todas las playeras.
No pantalón de mezclilla.
Solamente suéter kaki, azul marino ó blanco se puede usar en clase. Toda las chaquetas puede ser usada para ir o venir de la escuela. Pero en la clase tienen que dejar en los roperos.
Viernes es “Día rojo en Rankin”. Playeras rojas o playeras de Rankin pueden usarse los viernes con los pantalones de uniforme, shorts ó faldas.
Camisas tienen que estar fajadas.

Rankin es parte de programa “Desayuno Gratis”. Todos los niños van a recibir desayuno gratis como parte de un día de instrucción. ome Page

Peace Flag
The Peace Flag is flown under the Texas flag on every day that a peaceful atmosphere was maintained at Rankin on the previous day.

Student Pledge I pledge as a Rankin student to follow the six pillars of character which include respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, trustworthiness and good citizenship in order to make my school a better place to learn and me a better student.	Rankin Rap Rankin School is the best! Teachers help you pass the test! Students and teachers hold their heads up high Because we have our Rankin Pride. We have special gifts to share We're artists and athletes and people who care. Rankin Roadrunners, we are great! That's a fact you can't debate!
