Advanced Placement Program
Participating in the AP program gives students the opportunity to take college-level courses while attending Sam Houston High School. AP courses demand skills that can lead to success in college. Students will have the opportuntiy to develop writing skills, problem-solving techniques, and study habits that are expected of college students. Plus, taking rigorous AP courses demonstrates students' maturity, willingness to push themselves intellectually, and commitment to academic excellence, which can help students stand out in the college admissions process.
Each AP course has a correspoinding AP exam that schools worldwide administer in May by College Board. College Board AP Exams are an essential part of the AP experience and provides students- and colleges and universities- with a standardized measure of what students have accomplished in the AP classroom. AP exam grades (if sufficiently high) could earn credit, placement, or both at thousands of colleges and universities in the United States and around the world, enabling students to move into upper level courses immediately. Taking an AP exam is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged to let students experience a college-level exam. AP exams are evaluated by college and university professors and AP teachers using college-level standards.
