Sam Houston is thrilled to announce that Sara Mayo has been selected as the AISD Kiwanis Teacher of the Year for 2010!
This is Sara's 6th year at Sam Houston and her 7th with Arlington ISD. Overall, Sara has been teaching for 16 years.
Sara teaches in the Secondary Alternate Curriculum department, where she focuses on Activities for Daily Living with her students.
Her students truly mean the world to her, and she sets a positive example for all of her collegues here at Sam Houston! When asked about what she loves about her job, Sara responded, "I love to watch a student 'get it!' I love having parents call and tell me something that their student did at home that they learned at school- like make a recipe, fold clothing, figure out the tip at a restaurant, greet a family member appropriately, etc. I really love examining kiddos and figuring out their learning gaps, and then helping them fill those gaps so that the student can be as independent as possible."
Sara said her students continue to inspire her in a variety of ways; "My students remind me to focus on the positive and what I can do- not what I can't do - in life."
Many congratulations to Sara! She is truly an asset to the family at Sam Houston! |
