SHHS Teacher John Juneau Wins 2010 AWARE Award of Excellence

John Juneau Congratulations to John Juneau, who teaches Math and is a Student Council Sponsor, who was chosen for the 2010 AWARE Award of Excellence! This is Mr. Juneau's ninth year with AISD and Sam Houston High School. Mr. Juneau said the favorite part about his job is the students, they always make his day; "They constantly challenge me to be a better teacher."

The AWARE Foundation was established in 1989 by a group of private citizens for the purpose of recognizing and rewarding excellence among Arlington Independent School District classroom teachers. The name AWARE stands for "Arlington Will Award and Recognize (Educational) Excellence."

Multiple winners and runners-up for the AWARE Award of Excellence are selected from grade levels typically grouped as follows: Pre-kindergarten through 1st grade, 2nd through 4th grades, 5th and 6th grades, Junior High School, and High School.

Sara Mayo Selected as AISD Teacher of the Year!

Sara Mayo

Sam Houston is thrilled to announce that Sara Mayo has been selected as the AISD Kiwanis Teacher of the Year for 2010!

This is Sara's 6th year at Sam Houston and her 7th with Arlington ISD. Overall, Sara has been teaching for 16 years.

Sara teaches in the Secondary Alternate Curriculum department, where she focuses on Activities for Daily Living with her students.

Her students truly mean the world to her, and she sets a positive example for all of her collegues here at Sam Houston! When asked about what she loves about her job, Sara responded, "I love to watch a student 'get it!' I love having parents call and tell me something that their student did at home that they learned at school- like make a recipe, fold clothing, figure out the tip at a restaurant, greet a family member appropriately, etc. I really love examining kiddos and figuring out their learning gaps, and then helping them fill those gaps so that the student can be as independent as possible."

Sara said her students continue to inspire her in a variety of ways; "My students remind me to focus on the positive and what I can do- not what I can't do - in life."

Many congratulations to Sara! She is truly an asset to the family at Sam Houston!
