Sam Houston was a Texas Pioneer, born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, on March 2, 1793. Following his father's death in 1807, he moved to the vicinity of Maryville, Tennessee, located along a river that separated pioneer settlements from Cherokee lands. At the age of 16, he went to work in the village store-not being suited for this type of work, he spent three years with the Cherokee people. In 1813, Samuel began a military career under Andrew Jackson. In 1817, he received an assignment as a sub agent among the Cherokees. Samuel resigned from the army in 1818 to study law. He was elected district attorney of Nashville, Tennessee in his first year of law practice.
Houston served as representative to Congress from 1823 until he was elected Governor of Tennesee in 1827. He first came to Texas to settle disputes between Cherokees and the Comanche people in 1832.
The spirit of Sam Houston High School can be compared to the great spirit of Sam Houston himself. He led the Texas Army to victory at San Jacinto to accomplish Texas Independence.
Sam Houston served twice as President of the Texas Republic and it is this spirit of loyalty that carries through our life-style today. |
