James Bowie High School graduated its first IB class on June 7, 2008. THE IB PROGRAM WHAT IS IT? The International Baccalaureate Program is a rigorous course of study for highly motivated students in the 11th and 12th grades. Student work is graded on global standards by assessors around the world, and an IB diploma is internationally honored by universities as proof of excellent preparedness for college work. Many schools, including the UT system, offer college credit for IB coursework. But the IB program is far more than a fine academic program. IB focuses on the whole person, seeking to create “inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” Students working towards an IB diploma are therefore required to complete Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) hours, to take a unique course in Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and to write an extended essay under the supervision of a mentor. This comprehensive and international approach to student learning aims to develop the whole person as a citizen not only of the local community, but of the world at large. Although not all Bowie students will choose to take the IB curriculum, we anticipate the IB program to greatly enrich our entire student body and faculty through the spread of fine teaching practices, IB’s commitment to service, and its emphasis on international perspectives. We believe that Bowie’s diversity will be a major strength as we engage in this new challenge. IB AND THE CLASS OF ’11: Through meetings and classroom visits to our feeder schools last year we began informing our current ninth graders about the IB program, emphasizing the need to be enrolled in a second language in 9th grade. We will again be offering special summer Geometry and IPC classes in ’08 for students not on the honors math track or students who are enrolled in pre-AP biology and want to fulfill the state physics requirement through IPC.
