Key Club students, Tiffany P., Andy P., and Vince T., attended the Weekend of a Lifetime leadership conference sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and received leadership awards. Congratulations to these students and the Key Club sponsors Sheri Russell and Lynda Wood.

National Hispanic Recognition Program

imageSenior Flor R., has been designated a “Scholar” in the College Board’s 2009-10 National Hispanic Recognition Program.  This year, the NHRP is recognizing more than 5,000 students selected from a pool of 200,000 students who took the 2008 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors and identified themselves as Hispanic.  Students are recognized as either a National Hispanic Scholar or Honorable Mention Finalist based upon their PSAT/NMSQT scores from their region and their academic achievements.

Alencia L., junior, is currently featured in the online JC Penney's catalog modeling spring fashion. She has modeled in several fashion shows in Dallas including one for Michael Kors.

National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist

Jared W. has been named as a finalist in both the 2010 Competition for National Merit Scholarships and the 2010 Competition for National Achievement Scholarships.

The selection of 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15, 000 finalists is now in progress. The selection of 800 Achievement Scholarship winners from the Finalist group of 1,600 is also in progress. Winners will be announced in April, May, and July.

Jared is an outstanding representative for Bowie High School in both scholarship programs. We are proud of him and his accomplishments! He is a winner in every sense of the word!

Bowie QB Named Offensive Player of the Year

Volunteer Quarterback Deric D. was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the Associated Press. He guided the Bowie Volunteers to the Class 5A Division II regional finals. Coach Perry states, "...The reasons why we won is become of him."

Student Prepares for Solo Flight

Jametrya W., 10, is a student in the CRP Future Pilots Flight School in Oak Cliff. She expects to become the first and only female pilot in the school founded by Tuskegee Airmen. Jametrya's solo flight in November will be from Dallas Executive Airport to Waco and back. This will be the final test she will have to take to earn a light sport license. Jametrya hopes to earn a degree in Aviations Management and become a private and commerical pilot. (source: Dallas Weekly, August, 2009)

Track Star Runs in Italy

Junior track runner, Darnell P. had the awesome experience of running track in Reggio Emilia, Italy this summer sponsored by the Ft. Worth Sister Cities Organization. This program takes a group of students from the area to another country to compete in a variety of sports every four years. Darnell participated in the 100m and 200m races and received 2nd place in both granting him two silver medals. Darnell said, "It was a great experience and he was blessed to get the opportunity to go overseas and represent the USA. Between the food and the sleeping conditions, you learn to appreciate what you have at home". The Bowie family is very proud of Darnell's accomplishments.

Outstanding Orchestra Performer

Orchestra student Chase F., 12, received the Outstanding Performer Medal at the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Competition in Austin for his awarding winning performance on the viola. Chase's name will be published in the 2009 Book of Champions. Congratulations to Chase! His orchestra teacher is Mrs. Babcock.

AcDec Finishes in Top 10

After 5 months of intense lecture and non-stop testing, the Bowie ACDEC team was able to show off their skills at Central HS and finished the competition finishing in the top 10 out of 24 teams.

FBLA Students Qualify for State

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students qualified a chapter record 42 members for the State Leadership Conference in April. Our school also earned the Sweepstakes Award for best overall team performance. In addition to proving their academic skills, these young adults conducted themselves with equal parts dignity, humility, and school spirit that would make any educator proud. Please congratulate them on their accomplishment. Mr. Jeff Krieger is the FBLA sponsor.

Belles Win Sweepstakes

The Award-Winning Bowie Belles returned from competition in New Braunfels with multiple sweepstakes trophies. The team won the following: Team Sweepstakes, Officer Sweepstakes, 1st place team modern, 1st place officer military, 1st place officer prop, 2nd place team hip hop, 2nd place in division, Outstanding Presentation, and Outstanding Choreography. The team is coached by Mrs. Glenn.

AP Scholars

The AP Program offers several AP Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. The following BHS seniors have been granted recognition by the College Board as AP Scholars: Reesa A., Bill H., Marlen I., Ian J., Benjamin L., Flor R., and Jared W. The following BHS graduates have been granted recognition from the College Board as AP Scholars (not shown in photo): Devin B., John B., Michael J., Maykei N. (with honors), Ken N. Bowie Step Team Winners

The Bowie Souljahs received 1st place at the Annual Arlington ISD MLK Step Competition held in the Bowie High School Auditorium.  Participating high schools included Martin High Girls and Boys, Arlington High Coed, Lamar Boys and Bowie Boys and Girls Teams. The Souljahs and Lady Steppers also received 1st place at the 3rd Annual HYPE Competition. Congratulations to the Souljahs and all the teams that participated.

Martin Luther King Sharing the Dream Essay Contest Winners

Congratulations to Kelsey L. and Destiny P. for being selected as the winners of the Martin Luther King Sharing the Dream Essay Contest. Kelsey received a $1,000 Scholarship for 1st place and Destiny received a $750 Scholarship for 2nd place. Kelsey read her essay at the MLK Awards Banquet. All winners were formally recognized at the MLK Awards Banquet on Friday, January 15, 2010 in the Bluebonnet Ballroom at UTA.

Manhassett Community Service Award

Thespian National Qualifiers

Members of The Bowie Headliners Theatre Department traveled to the Texas Thespian Festival in Corpus Christi. We are pleased to announce some great accomplishments from our participants! Brandon A. and Josh C. qualified for Nationals in the category of Duet Pantomime. Allowing them the opportunity to compete at the International Thespian Festival over the summer. Jennifer Nwene and Ethan Wilbourn both received callbacks from Colleges through their Scholarship Auditions. We are so proud of all of them for representing Bowie with such pride!

Jared and Ian are recognized at a National Achievement Finalist; Kelsey is recognized as a National Achievement Outstanding Participant; and Ian was recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar.

AVID Students Attend Exposition

Junior AVID students, Wendy C. and Betty M. completed an internship this summer with MHMR of Tarrant County through the Texas A & M Health Disparities Academy. Due to their hard work and dedication, Dr. Mary Shaw, Director of the Center for the Study of Health Disparities, selected Wendy and Betty to attend the American Public Health Association Exposition in November held in Philadelphia, PA. The student will work with Dr. Shaw to present the research findings from the summer internship.

Debate Winners

Ben L. and Zach L. finished 2nd in a hard fought tournament to earn their spot in the UIL 100 State Policy Debate tournament. This is the 2nd straight year they have made State and have given Bowie its first UIL Academic points leading up to the UIL Spring Meet.Jonah Hanft is the debate coach.

ColorGuard Shines at Camp

The Colorguard Section won the Best in Show at the annual Spirit of the Volunteers Band Squad Comp this summer. Leaders are Alicia Ruiz, Kat Narvaez and Curtis Redman.
