The Department of Fine Arts at James Martin High School includes the Band, Choir, Orchestra, Drama, Speech and Visual Arts departments. The program provides possibilities for students to develop their intellectual, creative, and expressive capabilities. Experiences in art, music and theater arts help students become knowledgeable about the individual contribution of each of these areas to the development of civilization and the specific modes of communication unique to the arts. |

The Martin High School Band, “The Pride of Southwest Arlington,” has been a top award winning program since it began in 1982. The band averages 280 students in Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band 1, Concert Band 2 and Varsity Band. The program also includes two award winning Jazz Bands, Color Guard and Drumline. The band has been a consistent Sweepstakes UIL winner, as well as, a three time State UIL Marching Contest participant. The five concert bands have won numerous awards and trophies around the country. The concert and jazz bands participate in several concerts a year including winter, mid-winter, spring and UIL Concert Contests. Please click on the band link for concerts and upcoming events. The Martin Choir Department opened in 1982 with 32 students enrolled in one choir. The current enrollment is 350 students involved in over 10 performing organizations. Martin choirs have won Outstanding or Best In Class at music festivals from New York City to San Francisco, and has received over 60 Sweepstakes awards in UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. Martin choirs have sung at the state convention of Texas Music Educators Education Association, the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association, and the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Martin High School Theatre Department began in 1982 with three classes and performed only two plays that first year. Since then, it has grown into an award winning and recognized department that offers many performance opportunities to the students such as the Fall Mainstage and Little Theatre production, the UIL One Act Play, two student written and produced plays, and an annual spring musical performed in collaboration with the band, choir and orchestra departments. Throughout it’s history the Martin Theatre Department has been a dominant force in UIL competition winning honors at the district, region, area and state levels. The Martin High School Orchestra Program is an award-winning organization, composed of over 250 students in five orchestras: Symphony, Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Concert I, and Concert II. The orchestra program started in 1982 with eight students. It has remarkably grown since then and consistently earns Sweepstakes ratings at the UIL Orchestra Contest and top ratings at other festivals around the country. The Art Department at Martin High School offers classes in Art I, Art II, Art III and Art IV in addition to Graphic Design III & IV. Students are exposed to a wide variety of artistic media and methods and challenged to think creatively and develop problem-solving skills. Advanced students are encouraged to build a portfolio and to develop the necessary written and oral skills needed to enter post secondary schooling in the visual arts. Teachers are Debra Allison, Dan Darr, Stacy Kouba, Anne Nagim, Lucy Bartholomee, and David Tripp. |
