Who are we:
Arlington Coalition for Education is a collaboration of civic-minded organizations whose common thread is their interest in supporting youth in their educational endeavors.
Who are the current member organizations:
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Inc.
How long have we been in existence:
The coalition was formed in April 2008.
What is our mission:
Arlington Coalition for Education is a collaboration of civic-minded organizations whose goal is to improve the academic performance of students, while empowering students, parents, educators, and the community as a whole.
Who do we serve:
Youth in Arlington, TX. We focus on schools in AISD that are located in communities that are plagued with low income, gang violence, high crime rates, and high dropout rates. Reports by the Arlington Police Department Crime Analysis Unit include the following alarming statistics:
• 90% of students residing in the target area qualify for free lunch
• 78% of elementary students are considered “at risk”
• 36% of residents are illiterate
• 20% of children residing in this area are with a single parent
• 22% of children are living at or below the poverty level
• 6.6% of residents are unemployed (the highest % in Tarrant County)
• 60% of elementary students have either been approached by a gang or know someone who has been approached.
Accomplishments:
• Contributed 300+ volunteer hours towards Global Youth Service Day
• Contributed 200+ volunteer hours towards the Arlington Alliance for Youth: Success in School Summit
• Sponsored the first Leaders Inspiring Families for Excellence Academy (February 2009)
