The Daily Communicator will be our method of communicating homework expectations, reporting student behavior, and requesting failing papers be signed and returned. A “Reminders/Comment” area is provided to notify parents of meetings, projects, events, etc. Parents can use this area to let us know about scheduled doctor’s appointments or other concerns. Parents are to view the Daily Communicator nightly and initial it at the bottom of the page. It should be sent to school daily with the student.
Students who satisfactorily follow the work and study habits and the behavior expectations indicated on the bottom portion of the Daily Communicator will receive a stamp, sticker, or star for that day. An “X” marked in one of the boxes indicates an area of concern.
The following daily consequences have been set up:
One X = Time out – 10 minutes of recess
Two X’s = Time out – 20 minutes of recess
Three X’s – Time out – all of recess
Four X’s = Time out in another 2nd grade classroom
Five X’s = Office referral
Homework will be given at the teacher’s discretion for practice, reinforcement, and enrichment of skills and concepts being taught in second grade according to the TEKS. Students are to read at least 20 minutes nightly (Knightly Reading). Students will be expected to finish incomplete homework assignments during recess or station time, and forgotten homework is to be brought to school the following day. Projects or special reports will be assigned at various times during the year with specific directions attached to explain the assignment. One “Oops Pass” per six weeks will be allowed per one forgotten homework assignment. (Oops Pass does not apply to projects or reports.) The Daily Communicator will be marked (“X” given for forgotten homework assignments after one “oops Pass: has been issued.
Report cards are issued to students every six weeks to be viewed by parents, signed, and returned to school. Numerical grades are given for Language Arts (Reading and Writing), and Math. Letter grades (E, S, U, & N) are assigned to the areas of Art, Music, P.E., Science, and Social Studies. Graded papers are sent home to communicate the student’s progress and should be reviewed by the parent and student. In order to help facilitate the learning and mastery of skills and concepts taught, students are encouraged to correct assignments that have been assessed a failing grade. Teacher’s request that the paper be signed by a parent and returned to school the following day.
To further communication with parents, Progress Reports are sent home at the mid six weeks’ grading period with students who have a failing average or have a grade average that has dropped significantly. Progress Reports should be signed and returned to the teacher the following day.
