5th Grade

Policies and Procedures

Discipline plan

The discipline plan that will be used in fifth grade will be that of rewarding good behavior through praise, privilege, or tangible items while depending on the circumstances, inappropriate behavior will warrant one or all of the following choices.

1.     Warning

2.    Communicator sign/note on communicator if necessary

3.    Time out in another classroom

4.    Time out in another grade level

5.    Office referral

We will choose the most appropriate consequence for the behavior depending on the circumstance. For example, many behaviors can be taken care of with just a warning. Certain behaviors, however, that violate standard classroom procedures or are of a severe nature may warrant an automatic communicator sign or an office referral. Repeated behaviors may result in consequences that escalate accordingly.

Communicator signs will result in loss of recess time or classroom privilege. All students who miss recess time will do so by sitting outside.

3-4 communicator signs for a given offense in a six week period will result in an “N” on the report card for that six weeks.

5 or more communicator signs for a given offense in a six week period will result in a “U” on the report card for that six weeks.

An office referral will result in an automatic “N” or “U,” depending on the severity of the behavior and number of referrals for the six weeks.

5th Grade’s Homework Policy

Students in 5th grade will have homework assigned to them most school nights. Homework is given in the amount needed to practice skills learned throughout the school day. This work is intended to be independent practice of these skills, and minimum assistance should be needed or provided. Students are usually given class time to begin assignments and must learn to use their time wisely. Please keep in mind that students in 5th grade must pass the TAKS tests to be promoted, so this independent practice is very important as they will not be able to get any assistance on the actual test.

5th Grade’s

Late Work Policy

We expect students to turn in homework or class work on time. The teacher will assign a due date for all homework or unfinished work. If work is not turned in when it is due, the student has one additional day to complete and turn in the work for late credit. The grade for late work will be no higher than a 70. If work is not turned in on the second day, it then becomes a zero. This rule also applies to reading minutes.

If a student has an excused absence, the student has one day for each day that he/she was absent to complete makeup assignments. Work may be picked up from the office if a parent calls early in the school day to request it. If an absence is unexcused, the student will receive a zero on all missed assignments and will not be allowed to make them up. This complies with district attendance policy.

Redos

During the first semester, students may redo two (2) failing assignments per six week grading period in any subject for a grade of 70. Students will be given two “Redo Coupons” each six weeks that must be attached to the original assignment and the redone assignment. Students are responsible for keeping the coupons, and they will not be replaced if lost or misplaced. It is the student’s responsibility to redo assignments and turn them in by the end of the six week grading period. Late assignments may not be redone. Quizzes and tests may not be redone, as well as other class assignments that are designed to measure progress. It is our intention that report card grades reflect both the student’s effort and ability in each subject.

During the second semester of school, assignments will no longer be accepted for a redo. This is done in an effort to help students be accountable for their effort on assignments and prepare them for Sixth Grade where no assignments are accepted for a redo.

Where to find your child’s homework and graded papers

Children should write down their homework assignments each night on the back of their communicator. If they complete the assignment during the class, they should check off “done” next to the assignment. Their homework is to be kept in the pocket in their binder labeled “Homework/Communicator”. Homework for all subjects is kept there.

All graded papers are to be kept for the entire six weeks period until report cards come home. Their binders have a pocket labeled for each subject’s graded papers. If you have questions about their grades, this is where you should look.
