ACCELERATED READER CLUBS

West  students are busy reading and testing on what they have read.  Based on the difficulty of the book and the score on the AR test, students earn points.  Once the student has earned at least 25 points, the student becomes a member of an Accelerated Reader Club.  Here are the newest members of the Accelerated Reader Clubs:

  • When you come to West, please be sure to see the Thanksgiving Turkey in the hallway.  The huge turkey has feathers that have been made by the students.  On each feather, a student has recorded something he or she is thankful for.

  • A big thank you goes to the students in the Bowie Key Club who come each week to help 5th graders in math.  Ms. Mahan, Ms. Peltier, and Ms. Price have arranged for these students to help with math tutoring for several years.  It is especially good to see former West students return to help others!

Celebrity Reads Posters

Please take time to review the guidelines for the contest that the Arlington Public Library is having to select 9 Arlington educators for the Celebrity Reads posters.  The contest begins on November 16, and entries must be received by December 18.

Let's put a West teacher on a Celebrity Reads poster!

ARTIST OF THE WEEK

SERENA HUYNH and NATHAN NGUYEN have recently been selected as the Artist of the week.  SERENA HUYNH's art work used the work of Alexander Calder for her inspiration.  She sculpted an animal out of wire.

NATHAN NGUYEN, also a 6th grader, created a winter scene using chalk pastels.  He blended the colors to create a winter sky, snow, and birch trees.

West is very fortunate to have MS. WHITTENBERG on staff to teach art.  Because of her excellence in teaching, Ms. Whittenberg was selected to make a presentation at the Texas Art Educations Association convention this weekend.  Congratulations to Ms. Whittenberg and to the students at West who are doing exceptional art work.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE
For HOPE

HOPE CARAM, 3rd grader in Ms. Maddux’s class, is concerned about people in Arlington who may not have enough food.  She has proposed a collection of canned food which will be delivered to Mission Arlington.

The food drive will begin next Monday, November 16 and will end on Monday, November 23.  Each child will be asked to bring at least TWO cans of food.  Hope figures that if everyone will participate, West can collect more than 1,800 cans of food.

You may send canned food with your child or you may drop off canned food in the office.
