LET'S STAMP OUT TARDIES!

With the change from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time, West experienced a marked drop in students arriving to school after the last bell!  Let's continue this trend!  The first bell rings at 8:10 am and the last bell rings at 8:20 am.  Students are tardy at 8:20 am.

Safety in the Driveways

There is a rising concern for the safety of children and staff in the driveways at West Elementary.  Your awareness of this problem and your help are needed to ensure the safety of everyone at arrival and dismissal times—students and staff.

The procedures for dropping off children in the morning have not changed.  Parents are expected to pull in next to the curb to allow their children to exit their cars.  If there are no open spots, parents may allow children to exit their cars when traffic has been stopped by the crossing guards.  There should be no movement of traffic when the flags are down and traffic has been stopped.  Children are to walk to the drive through to cross into the building.

The procedure for picking up children in the afternoon is very much the same for the front of the building.  Parents are encouraged to pull into a parking spot in order to pick up children.  At no time should a parent park in the drive through lanes and leave the car unattended.  At no time should a parent stop and motion for children to cross traffic to get into the car.

Each morning and afternoon, there are two teachers on duty in the front along with student Safety Patrols.  These people are in charge of directing traffic and crossing children.  Parents are expected to follow the instructions of the adults in charge.  These adults in charge should not have to endure abusive language or threats—just because they are trying to ensure the safety of children.

It is important for parents to make sure that anyone given the duty of picking up children is aware of the traffic procedures.  Parents who are verbally abusive and non compliant will be identified and banned from the school campus.

The majority of West parents are very cooperative. However, a small number are not.  The support of the majority of parents is needed to let others know that abusive and uncooperative behavior will not be tolerated at West Elementary!

REMINDER TO PARENTS

The West office staff cannot be responsible for taking and delivering messages for students.  Arrangements for after school should be discussed before the school day begins.  In the case of an emergency, please ask to speak with an Administrator, who will make sure that the message is delivered.
