Welcome to all things publications and a few extras. I’ve been teaching at AHS since 2006. I started with journalism and the publications and in recent years picked up some English electives and a CTE class. I earned my degree in Journalism from the University of North Texas in 1999 and returned to get my teacher certification from UNT in 2004. I am certified to teach Journalism and ELA, and love having the opportunity to teach both.

The intro to Journalism class starts with the First Amendment and ethics and then we get into interviewing, writing, and photography. The class provides an overview of all things journalism and at the end of the year, students can apply to be a part of one of the publications.

Yearbook is exactly what it sounds like, we create the yearbook. The year starts with theme development and then we get into design, interviewing, and writing. There is also a marketing aspect as we come up with creative ideas to sell the yearbook.

In Photojournalism, students learn the ins and outs of DSLR cameras and photo composition techniques and then they go out and take pictures at all the school events (classes, clubs, games, fine arts, etc.).

Our Newspaper is online, www.coltnews.com, and the staff comes up with all the story ideas, conducts the interviews and writes the stories. Our plan is to add a multimedia aspect through videos and podcasts.

The Literary Magazine has been in print and online over the years. In it we showcase student art, photography, poetry, prose, music, and film. The LitMag staffers promote the magazine, gather submissions and edit them as needed, and then design the print magazine and post pieces online.

In Book Club (officially titled World Literature) we sit around reading and discussing books. If you like to read, this class is for you.

Women’s Lit is similar to Book Club except we focus our reading on topics pertaining to women and books written by women.

Creative Writing is the total opposite of writing for journalism and gets the right brain working. We try our hand at writing in all the genres, and topics and prompts come from everywhere.

Principals of Education and Training is designed to introduce learners to the various careers available within education. If you want to be a teacher, this is the beginning class for you.

If you are interested in these classes and have questions, please email me at emiller5@aisd.net.

Learn more about journalism, yearbook, newspaper, photojournalism and literary magazine: Arlington High students in journalism and on the yearbook, newspaper, photojournalism and literary magazine staffs share why they joined and why they think you should too.
