ARMI: At Risk Male Initiative<\/h2>\n

Bowie High School, in Arlington, Texas, is one of only nine schools across the nation that has implemented AVID Center\u2019s African American Male Initiative (AAMI), a subdivision of the AVID system. The initial focus of AAMI was on African American male achievement and engagement. Because of Bowie\u2019s proven success with our all African American male AVID elective classes, we decided to include ALL males, not just African Americans. Thus, we redefined our AAMI program as ARMI (At-Risk Male Initiative). Our current ARMI boys benefit from the camaraderie of each other by embracing their unique circumstances. Through Culturally Relevant Teaching strategies, our ARMI boys are not only accessing and demonstrating success in advanced courses, such as AP, IB, and dual credit, but also learning life skills that aid in their transformation into young men with bright futures.
