Red Ribbon Week is huge throughout the Arlington ISD.
Schools throughout the district have been doing everything this week from wearing their favorite jerseys to defeat drug use to being superheroes against drugs as part of the national campaign for students to live healthy, drug-free lives.
The AISD plays a big role in that thanks to the district intervention specialist program that is part of the guidance and counseling department. The focus of the support program is to provide early intervention and rehabilitation and referral services regarding alcohol, tobacco and drug use. The specialists work to develop and implement programs on drug prevention in elementary and secondary schools.
“Our intervention specialists work with campuses to ensure students are aware of the dangers of substance abuse and drugs,” guidance and counseling director Telisa Brown said. “It’s a tough job. We’re working with students from elementary to high school because prevention is important at all ages. Early preventative efforts will help students make wise choices later in life.”
The work is year-round but it gains more attention during 2019 Red Ribbon Week and is a good way for the specialists to let students and parents know what services are available in the district.
One area that’s been heavily emphasized is the vaping epidemic. In the AISD, the intervention specialists have been giving class presentations and well as educational training to teachers.
“We want to reduce the risk factors and build resilience for students so they’re strong advocates for themselves and their bodies,” Brown said. “We have to come together as a district to ensure our kids are safe.”
Arlington ISD is committed to growing whole and well-rounded young adults who are prepared to excel in college, career and beyond. The district’s mission is that every one of its more than 57,000 students will graduate exceptionally prepared for college, career and citizenship.
