The Arlington Independent School District is committed to providing accessible information to all people wherever possible. The District will work to ensure that persons with disabilities have an opportunity equal to that of their non-disabled peers to access and utilize information technologies and technology-related services.
A committee, consisting of internal stakeholders and technical staff, was created in October 2016 to draft and approve a Plan for New Content. Their charge was to:
- Establish a consistent web experience across all sites for stakeholders.
- Refresh the design of the current websites.
- Create expectations and standard operating procedures for maintenance of the websites to ensure that content posted is accessible to all stakeholders.
- Develop a training plan and timeline for rolling out the new guidelines and websites.
The District completed an audit on its website to identify any online content or functionality that is inaccessible to persons with disabilities, including anything maintained by, or offered through a third-party vendor or an open source. The audit findings identified barriers in the software, layout and design, and content writing that make online information inaccessible to persons who rely on assistive technologies, such as screen readers, magnifiers, hearing aids, and synchronous captioning for videos.
The District has developed a Corrective Action Plan to address all inaccessible content and functionality identified during the audit. This plan includes a detailed schedule for addressing the issues, setting up systems of accountability and verification of claims of accessibility by vendors or open sources, and creating a system of testing and accountability to maintain the accessibility on an ongoing basis. All third-party vendor and open source software systems and applications must be accessible to all persons by December 15, 2018, except where doing so would impose an undue burden or create a fundamental alteration. All future software systems and applications purchased by departments or campuses will be evaluated to ensure that it meets accessibility requirements before the purchase order can be approved.
Web Services will work with departments and campuses to reach out to all vendors to ensure that the software or service the district is currently using from the vendor complies with the district’s accessibility plan. We are asking that, if contacted, you assist Web Services with this communication with the vendors. As Web Services reviews the district’s Internet and Intranet sites, PDF forms may need to be updated to meet accessibility requirements and departments and campuses will be provided training in order to comply with the action plan.
The District will also provide accessibility training to all appropriate personnel, including, but not limited to, content developers, administrators, staff, and all others responsible for developing, loading, maintaining, or auditing online content and functionality.
