STAAR New Question Toolkit title image

In 2019, the 86th Texas Legislature passed HB3906, mandating a redesign of the STAAR program. As part of those changes, and via a subsequent adjustment to the legislation in HB321, the new STAAR assessment includes a 100% transition to online testing and includes a cap on the number of points that can come from multiple choice type questions. The redesign of the STAAR assessment will include a variety of technology enhanced items (TEIs). These TEIs will include question types such as drag-and-drop, match table grids, multiselect, etc. A summary of TEI question types, as well as the content area and grade level the new question types will appear, can be found on this document (https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/new-question-types-by-grade-and-content.pdf).

In order to familiarize our students with these new question types, Academic Services is subsequently redesigning and mirroring our internal Curriculum Assessment (CA) process to match the new STAAR. CAs will now include TEIs. Additionally, TEIs are being developed and presented in the Companion Documents within Curriculum Central as well as in the Unit Summative Assessments (beginning in the 3rd six weeks).

In addition to departments developing pre-made TEIs for use across the district, it is important for teachers to have options for creating their own TEIs. A “STAAR New Question Types Toolkit” has been developed for teachers who want to create TEIs, giving their students more opportunities to interact with these new question types. The toolkit can be found in Curriculum Central, on STAAR/EOC tested subjects/grade levels, under the “Assessments” section:
