• BEK 1 is a program for students in kindergarten through grade 1 who are limited English proficient. Students are provided the opportunity to receive special instruction designed to prepare them to be successful in kindergarten and first grade. Instruction focus is language development aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) appropriate to the level of the student. The program addresses the affective, linguistic and cognitive needs of the LEP student. Strategies appropriate for second language learners are incorporated throughout the curriculum. TEKS are the foundation for instruction and language development for participating students, which include oral social language, oral school language, phonological development and literacy skills.
