Citizen oversight committee meets for quarterly review of bond program

CBOC members try out Corey's piano lab

April 21, 2016 - The Citizens Bond Oversight Committee met yesterday for its quarterly review of the status and progress of the 2014 Bond program. Led by AISD Chief Financial Officer Cindy Powell, AISD staff gave updates on the various areas of the bond: fine arts; safety, security and technology; transportation; and facilities.

The meeting was held in the library at Corey Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language. Corey is currently receiving bond-funded renovations to transform the building from a traditional elementary school into a fine arts academy. Corey Principal Dr. Matt Varnell gave the committee members a tour of the sections of the building currently under construction, which included rooms for art, dance, theater, music and language. The construction is on schedule, with everything slated to be ready for the beginning of next school year.

The committee members also got to visit the academy's state-of-the-art piano lab. Corey's piano teacher, along with the piano teacher from Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language, explained and demonstrated how they use the lab to instruct students and help them develop a foundation for music.

The CBOC's task now is to prepare a report of its findings for the AISD Board of Directors. (Read more about the CBOC's charge.)
