AISD hosts groundbreaking ceremony for future Agricultural Science Center

April 10, 2017 - The AISD hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the future Agricultural Science Center last Thursday, April 7. AISD Board President Jamie Sullins and AISD Superintendent Marcelo Cavazos addressed the crowd and highlighted how this future districtwide facility will provide new opportunities for students.

Sloan Harris of VLK Architects also spoke and described the building that his firm designed. Intended to compliment another new AISD building currently under construction - the districtwide Career and Technical Center - the 23,00 square-foot Agricultural Science Center will include 54 flexible-fencing pens for goats and sheep, 14 heifer pens, rabbit pens, an animal exercise area, metal construction lab and two classrooms. The site and design also allow for future expansion if needed.

In addition, the center will be net-zero. It will include solar panels, a wind turbine and rain water collection, allowing the facility to operate completely on its own energy production. A display inside the building will illustrate for students and visitors the status of energy production and use.

Located in Dalworthington Gardens and scheduled to open in the fall, the Ag Center's construction is being managed by Ratcliff Constructors, following designs by VLK Architects. Construction began in February.
