From August 26 to October 6, CTC Advanced Culinary students Christina P. (team captain), Julian G. and Matthew G. participated in the Kids Fit Menu Challenge Invitational by creating and preparing a Chickadee Bowl dinner featuring mashed potatoes topped with street corn, grilled chicken, and drizzled with brown gravy.  The bowl was served with honey glazed carrots and a fruit parfait.  The team was paired with Cotton Patch Cafe, coached by Chef Chavoya and supported by Chef Almendarez.

They were given nutritional guidelines to meet using only ingredients on hand at Cotton Patch as well as a time limit for set up, cooking, and presentation on demo day.  This invitational is part of Medical City Children’s Hospital, kids teaching kids program which features a 21-day snack challenge for students and adults in AISD.  The students and coach met with a dietician from Medical City during the meal prep process, created the recipe, calculated the nutritional value, and practiced execution of the dish.  For making it to demo day, they earned $500 for their program.  If chosen by the judges, the students’ meal will appear on the Cotton Patch menu with their picture.  Judges (2 adults and 2 children) praised the students for preparing the best chicken they ate all day.  They were also told the name of their dish was the best one.
