Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Transfer Student?

A transfer student is someone who attends a school for which his or her address is not zoned. That includes students who live in the Arlington ISD but choose to go a different Arlington ISD school than the one for which they are zoned. It also includes students who live outside the district but apply to attend an Arlington ISD school.

The term “transfer student” does not apply to students who live in and attend school in the Arlington ISD and then move to a new address and new school zone within the district. These students simply need to enroll in their new school. They do not need to apply for a transfer.

How Do I Transfer?

Fill out the online transfer application. During an open transfer window, a link to the application will be posted on this page. Select up to three schools you would like your student to attend.

Wait to receive your transfer offer. Email or text offers will be sent during or within three weeks after the close of the transfer window. Once you receive the offer, you will have 48 hours from the time Arlington ISD sends you the email to accept or reject the transfer. If you do not respond within 48 hours, the district will no longer consider the request valid.

Keep the documentation of your accepted transfer offer to present when you register your child at the school.

Are There Different Types of Transfer Windows?

Yes, there are two types of transfer windows:

The annual Regular Transfer Window generally happens in the fall semester of each year and students are considered based on a Board-approved priority order where there is space available.

The Special Transfer Window can open at any time after the annual Regular Transfer Window. During this Special Transfer Window, students are considered on a “first come-first served” basis where space is available. An exception to this is a sibling transfer to a specialized program.

What Does “Regular Transfer Window” Mean?

A regular transfer window is a dedicated time of year to apply for student transfers to campuses within the Arlington Independent School District. Students from in or out of the district can apply for transfers during this window, and transfer requests will be granted in the following priority order as outlined in Arlington ISD Board Policy. Priority is determined by Board Policy. Intra-district Transfers are addressed in Policy FDB (Local). Inter-district Transfers are addressed in Policy FDA (Local).

Students who go to school outside the Arlington ISD can request a transfer to a school in the Arlington ISD – or – students who go to school inside the Arlington ISD can request a transfer to a different school in the Arlington ISD. If seats are available, your child may be able to attend your preferred school.

What Does “Special Transfer Window” Mean?

A special transfer window is a dedicated time of year to apply for student transfers into the District or to other campuses within the Arlington Independent School District.
For example, if your student attends Amos Elementary, but you’d like them to be enrolled at Adams Elementary, you can apply for a transfer. If seats are available, your child may be able to attend your preferred school.

Are Students Not Currently Enrolled in the Arlington ISD Eligible to Transfer?

Yes, the Arlington ISD is an open enrollment district and will consider student transfers from inside and outside of the district using the priority order outlined in Arlington ISD Board Policy during the Regular window.

When Does the Regular Transfer Window Open and When Does It Close?

November 16 - 30, 2023 starting at 9:00 AM.

When Does the Special Transfer Window Open and When Does It Close?

March 26 - April 11, 2024 and during the summer, July 2 - July 18, 2024 starting at 9:00 AM.

Is There a Fee to Transfer?

No, there is no transfer fee.

How Will the District Decide if My Child’s Transfer Request is Approved?

All applications during the Regular Transfer Window will be considered based on the priority order as outlined in Arlington ISD Board policy. Intra-district Transfers are addressed in Policy FDB (Local). Inter-district Transfers are addressed in Policy FDA (Local).

All applications for the Special Transfer Window (including those from employees) will be considered on a first come - first served basis according to the digital timestamp on the application. That means that applications will be considered in the order they’re received. An exception to this is a sibling transfer to a specialized program.

Can I Apply to More Than One School?

Yes, you can request transfers for up to three schools.

Are Specialized Programs Open for Student Transfers?

Enrollment in a specialized program is based on an application process. Since the criteria for each program differs, specialized programs are not open for student transfers.

Specialized programs include:
  • Corey and Jones fine arts and dual language academies
  • Gunn Junior High and Fine Arts and Dual Language Academy
  • Arlington High School and Fine Arts and Dual Language Academy
  • Crow Leadership Academy
  • Pearcy STEM Academy
  • STEM Academy at Martin High School

What Happens if I’m Already on Transfer?

Violations of the District’s rules and regulations may result in revocation of the transfer agreement.

What Conditions Apply to Transfers?

All out-of-district transfers must have acceptable attendance and no discipline issues.
The student and their parent/guardian must follow all rules and regulations of the District , including those for student conduct and attendance. Violation of the District's rules and regulation's may result in revocation of the transfer agreement.
UlL Eligibility: All University Interscholastic League (UIL ) rules shall be followed when considering transfer requests. The receiving campus principal and athletics director or fine arts director, as appropriate, shall render decisions with respect to the eligibility of a transfer student for participation in UIL activities.
Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation of transfer students. AISD will not provide bus service to transfer students, including special needs students.

How Do I Know the Status of My Application of My Transfer and How Do I Accept a Seat?

Applications are not reviewable once submitted. However, once offers are made, you'll receive a "Seated" notification or a "Waitlist" notification. "Seated" indicates a seat is available at the campus requested. Waitlist indicates no seats are currently available at the requested campus. Upon receipt of the notification, a link is provided to either Accept or Decline the "Seated" school. Once a school is accepted, all other offers will be declined. Below is an image of the accept/decline screen for school choice one and a wait list notification for school choice two:
In this example, accepting the first choice will provide confirmation of the Accepted campus with a removed from waitlist for the second choice campus:
