Goodman Elementary

MISSION

To provide children with social, emotional, and academic problem-solving skills so they may emerge as contributing members of the community and develop a passion and purpose for lifelong learning.

VISION

To provide holistic and engaging learning experiences for all students.

History

Goodman Elementary is named for Miss Ethel Goodman a long time teacher and youth leader in Arlington. Miss Goodman began teaching at Watson in 1919, changed to Grace Chapel for two years, and then became a teacher in the Arlington Public Schools in 1922. She started at the South Side School (C. E. Dunn). In 1949, she started teaching fifth grade at West Side School (Ruby Ray Swift) where she remained until she retired in 1967.

Both Miss Ethel Goodman and her twin sister Tally taught at SouthSideSchool. While there together, they helped organize the Girl Scouts in Arlington. They also organized the Safety Council at SouthSideSchool.

Miss Goodman attended NorthTexas Agricultural College and received her B. A. from NorthTexas State. She received her ME from Texas Christian University.

When Miss Ethel Goodman retired in 1967, Mayor Vandergriff proclaimed May 29, 1967, as Ethel Goodman Day in honor of all her achievements. In 1974, she received the Woman of the Year Award and the Friend of Youth Award. Miss Goodman remained active as a volunteer until her death in early 1979.

Miss Goodman was a dedicated teacher and a very caring person. We at Goodman are honored to have our school named after her.
