Arlington ISD has phenomenal students at every campus. In 2006, a fellow Sam Houston High School alum (TCC Professor Eric Salas) and I started The Chapa-Salas Scholarship to recognize outstanding SHHS seniors. This year’s recipients (our 20th Class) are Daisy Armendariz, Taija Duncan-Ellis, and Sophia Ornelas!

Daisy plans to attend Texas Wesleyan University and major in Education, with hopes of becoming a high school teacher and coach. She will graduate in the Top 10% of her class after participating in a wide range of extracurriculars including AVID, JK Livin' Foundation, Student Council, Key Club, and National Honor Society. Defying stereotypes, Daisy is a standout softball and baseball player. She played varsity softball and JV baseball, earning All-District Academic and Honorable Mention Honors, while also playing on traveling baseball and softball teams. She has been honored as a Texas Rangers Youth Academy Whataburger Rising Star for softball and was picked for the MLB Develops Trailblazer Series in baseball.

Taija plans to attend the University of Houston and eventually practice Sports Medicine. She will graduate Summa Cum Laude in the Top 2% of her class, with a number of industry certifications from the Dipert Career & Technical Center, including in CPR/AED, Blood-Borne Pathogens, First Aid, HIPAA Compliance, and Phlebotomy. She will also graduate as a certified Medical Assistant. In addition to health-sciences classes, Taija played Basketball, lettered in Flag Football, and served as an Athletics Manager. A Rotary Award recipient, she also participated in National Honor Society and Choir, serving as Choir President and Student Director, as well as earning UIL State Finalist honors.

Sophia plans to attend Tarrant County College before transferring to The University of Texas at Arlington to become a teacher or social worker. She has an incredible record of grit. Due to a family tragedy her freshman year, she has worked 20-40 hours a week throughout high school. Despite that, she moved from "regular" to "honors" and Advanced Placement classes, maintaining an overall A- GPA. Sophia also is a standout "Fine Arts-lete," performing for four years in SHHS Theater and competing on the SHHS Wrestling Team, where she earned over 100 wins and was two-time District Champion, a three-time Regional Qualifier, a two-time State Qualifier, and most recently, a National Qualifier. She has been twice selected as SHHS Texan of the Year.

Please join me in congratulating Daisy, Taija, and Sophia on their successes and in wishing them the best for the future!
