Hi Colts,

One privilege of being a junior or senior and having a school in the heart of the city is off-campus lunch. Students are able to leave campus for lunch and drive or walk to eat somewhere off campus. It's an awesome thing that our kids love, so let's do it safely and allow this privilege to stick around!

Parents and students, if students choose to go off-campus for lunch, be aware of the following:

• Students are not supervised or under the responsibility of Arlington HS when they choose off-campus lunch. It's as if they have been dropped off at the mall or Six Flags and they must act according to the establishment's rules.
• Students must be OFF CAMPUS if they choose off-campus lunch. They may not eat outside the building on our campus. That area is AHS property and unsupervised.
• Other citizens may be at the establishment along with your student. Arlington HS is not in charge of those people or their actions.

Students, it is extremely important that you be alert and aware if you choose to leave AHS and be unsupervised. Arlington is an amazing city, but not every person you encounter is safe. Talk with your parent about what is allowed or not allowed when you are unsupervised.

• Should you talk to strangers?
• Should you behave a certain way in public?
• Should you save your money and just eat in the cafeteria sometimes?
• If you ever feel like something isn't right, call 911.

Parents, please talk with your students about where you are allowing them to eat for lunch. Do you let them go wherever they want? If so, consider talking about areas that you will allow and areas that you will not allow. Track them on their cell phones and watch their locations at lunchtime. If you do not allow them off campus for lunch, and they are leaving campus, give them a consequence.

Our work as educators at Arlington HS is to keep your kids safe. As high school students, freedoms are coming their way, but we also need to be diligent about educating them to be safe and smart citizens.

Let's all do our part to help our kids make the best choices and have a great 4 years of high school!
