Lamar High School

Dear Lamar High School Community,

I wanted to update you on the reason for the lockdown at 11:18 a.m. at Lamar High School. There was a fight near our campus with a report that one of the people involved had a gun.

Lamar High School resource officers responded immediately, and Arlington Police Department officers arrived within minutes to begin investigating. No weapon was found and no arrests were made. There was no threat to the campus. As a part of our protocol, Arlington Police cleared classes room-by-room, which can take some time. At 12:12 p.m. the lockdown was officially lifted.

We know that a lockdown is scary for students, families and staff. Our students and staff did an outstanding job following the protocols for a lockdown. As a reminder, all our staff are trained on what to do during a lockdown, and students participate in regular drills. We know this doesn’t remove the fear, but it means they know what to do in an emergency.

When a lockdown happens, we ask families not to come to campus and want to share more about why we ask that of you.

1. Police are investigating and need the public remain away from the campus so they don’t impede their investigation.

2. The campus will not be accessible to anyone trying to enter from the outside during a lockdown.

3. Extra traffic in the area creates congestion, making it more difficult for emergency responders to operate.

During a lockdown, staff members won’t answer the phones because they are following proper lockdown protocols. With that said, we know you’re worried and we’ll do our best to keep you informed by email, text messages, the school’s Facebook page, the Security Tracker and the Arlington ISD app. All of these will have the same information so you can choose which works best for you. We encourage you to visit our Safety Page to learn more about our response plans.

Our counseling team provided these five tips to help you talk to your children about the lockdown or any other traumatic event:

1. Create a safe environment that allows children to express their feelings.

2. Encourage open communication where children feel encouraged to talk about their experiences and emotions. Be a good listener without pressuring them to share more than they’re comfortable with.

3. Be honest and age-appropriate and use simple language. Avoid unnecessary, overwhelming details, but be truthful in addressing their concerns.

4. Validate their emotions by letting them know it’s okay to feel a range of emotions and that their reactions are normal.

5. Maintain routine and stability, which can be reassuring for children.

We appreciate your patience today and thank you for working with us to keep all students and staff at Lamar High School safe.

Sincerely,

Lesley Maroney
Principal
