Gunn Junior High looks a lot different

Gunn Junior High is changing. Construction to convert Gunn into the Arlington ISD’s fine arts/dual language junior high academy – one of the first projects in the 2019 Bond – has the school looking a lot different.

For starters, the entrance now faces west (instead of north). A new entry onto the campus is off Paisley Drive, and the temporary entry and all parking are on the west side of the school. There is also a new turf football field and surfacing for track and field events.

Inside the existing building, renovations are complete for the band room, orchestra room and choir room. Work on a new dance studio – in what was the library – is underway. Additional interior renovations will start this summer.

Gunn’s footprint is also growing with three additions. The first two additions are scheduled to open for the fall semester of 2021. The first and largest addition – all classrooms – is on the south end of the building. The steel erection for this addition is almost complete.

The foundation for the second addition – in the space between the two original buildings – is almost complete as well. This addition will house an all-new cafeteria (the old cafeteria was demolished), kitchen expansion and a media center.

The third addition, on the north end of the building, will house new locker rooms. Work is scheduled to begin later this month over winter break.
